MANILAhighway, Philippines — Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island continued to spew ash yesterday, a day after showing an elevated similar activity, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

Phivolcs said Kanlaon’s ash emissions occurred between 8:07 a.m. and 9:07 a.m.

“These events generated grayish plumes that rose 500 meters above the crater and drifted southeast,” state volcanologists said.

On Saturday, the volcano emitted ash between 5:46 a.m. and 7:02 a.m., which generated light-gray plumes that rose 750 meters above the crater.

At least 28 ash emissions lasting one hour and 16 minutes were recorded.

It was followed by ashfall events in Barangay Yubo in La Carlota City and Barangay Sag-ang in  La Castellana.

Sulfur fumes and stench were experienced by residents in both villages, Phivolcs said.

“The ash emissions have been generally quiet and occurred without seismic or infrasound signals,” Phivolcs said.

The volcano has been continuously degassing with occasional weak ash emissions since Oct. 19.

The public has been reminded that Kanlaon  remains under Alert Level 2. The current activity at the summit crater may lead to an eruptive unrest and increase in alert level.

Entry into the volcano’s four-kilometer-radius permanent danger zone is strictly prohibited as pyroclastic density currentshighway, ballistic projectiles and rockfall may occur anytime.
