National University came up with another huge win in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament by slaying another top four team in University of Santo Tomas, 58-53, Wednesday night at Mall of Asia Arena. ADVERTISEMENT

Jolo Manansala connected on six of his nine attempts, four of which from beyond the arc, to finish with 18 points in addition to seven rebounds to help refuel the Bulldogs’ dying Final four hopes.

“It feels amazing to win again, especially after so many close games since the first round where we kept losing at the end,” Manansala said.FEATURED STORIES SPORTS RESULTS: PBA Finals Ginebra vs TNT Game 5 November 6 SPORTS PBA Finals: ‘No excuses’ for Ginebra after crushing Game 5 loss SPORTS PBA Finals: TNT rebounds with Ginebra demolition for 3-2 lead NU Bulldogs score crucial win over UST Tigers

MANILA, Philippines–La Salle avoided an upset against Far Eastern University, 58-53, to solidify its position on top of the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament on Wednesday at Mall of Asia Arena.

“Well, we just have to give it to FEU. Sean [Chambers] is really doing a great job there, doing what he has with a young team. We just try to grind it out with them. We know it’s going to be a fast-paced game so we just try to keep it simple in our end,” coach Topex Robinson said.

“We tried to make it a boring game by not outrunning them because it’s going to be a disaster for us if we did. We just stepped up in those last few minutes of the fourth quarter. We did what we’re supposed to do and that’s to limit their scorers,” Robinson added.

MANILA, Philippines–National University edged defending champion University of Santo Tomas, 76-70, to extend its winning streak to 11 games in the UAAP Season 87 women’s basketball tournament on Wednesday at Mall of Asia Arena.

The Lady Bulldogs moved just three wins away from completing an elimination sweep for the seventh time in nine seasons. They wrap up the eliminations against Adamson, La Salle and FEU.

“Just glad that we pulled through in this one because we had a rough start, but I’m happy of how our players responded even though [UST] jumped at us early,” NU coach Aris Dimaunahan said. “We did not lose that focus we should be having for 40 minutes and part of which, that’s why we came back early because CC got some baskets early on.”

MANILA, Philippines–La Salle snapped a two-game losing streak with a come-from-behind 64-60 victory over Far Eastern University in the UAAP Season 87 women’s basketball tournament on Wednesday at Mall of Asia Arena.

With the win, the Lady Archers kept their slim Final Four hopes alive, improving to a 3-8 record with three games remaining in the elimination round and tying the Lady Tamaraws and the UP Fighting Maroons for fifth to seventh places — a full three games behind fourth-running Ateneo Blue Eagles

Ateneo will take on FEU on Saturday. A win by the Blue Eagles eliminates the Lady Tamaraws, the Lady Archers, and the Fighting Maroons from contention.

Despite a roller-coaster ride so far in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament, University of Santo Tomas is managing to hang on to a spot in the top four—albeit very precariously.

With the Growling Tigers clinging to fourth place after arresting a three-game slide only last week, they know that every game counts from here on.

“All we can say is that we’re aiming for the Final Four. That’s it,” Nic Cabañero said as he tries to again lead the Tigers at 6:30 p.m. at Mall of Asia Arena against the resurgent National University Bulldogs. “Those (three straight) losses became our motivation.”
